      Social
networking sites have become more and more popular and played an indispensable
part in human life. Actually, the number of people using social networking
sites has grown exponentially. To respond to the human needs, many applications
are created, and Facebook is one of the most popular applications in the world.
According to statistics by Trach Ryan in “The
uses and abuses of Facebook: A review of Facebook addiction”, in March
2014, the Facebook users were 1.28 billion in the site, and each day there are
at least 802 million new Facebook users. This popularity stems from some
benefits and advantages of Facebook, but it links to a deleterious global
phenomenon by the abuse. Online users spend a huge amount of time on Facebook,
and they gradually turn into the Facebook addicts. Evidence from surveys has
indicated that the excessive use of Facebook provokes the negative impacts for
users, affect not only on their daily activities but also on their relationships.
Therefore, this research, based on secondary data, will discuss the
consequences as well as propose some possible solutions to Facebook addiction
issue.

2. Discussion of findings

2.1 Benefits of Facebook and Facebook addiction fact

As reported by Suku Balci and Abdulkadir Golcu in “Facebook addiction among university students
in Turkey: “Selcuk Univerdity example”, “in the last five years Facebook
has started to take an important part of people’s daily life as the result of
developments in communication technologies”. It is undeniably true that
Facebook brings a lot of advantages to people. Its first benefit is for
information sharing. Users can frequently use Facebook to share information or
communicate with others people. When connecting members of Facebook form
anywhere in the world, users can learn different cultures, values and
traditions of other countries. For students, they can improve their study
through Facebook. According to Rutigafni and Moran Deri in “Cost and Benefits of Facebook for undergraduate
students” (2012), when their relationships are allowed to establish on
Facebook, they can share lectures, assignments as well as ask for advice on
their learning from others. Besides, its users take the opportunity to share
their information such as friend list, relationship, etc. (Afifa Fida Khattak,
Hayat Mohammad, Summiyce Ahmad 2017). Secondly, it is considered as a tool for
entertainment and relaxing. When people use Facebook, they find it convenient
to share their feelings in their daily life. Moreover, many application of
Facebook will help people relax after long working day. For example, they can
watch films, videos or read short funny stories, news, etc. on some pages of
Facebook. In addition, people can also do online business by using their
Facebook account. Some single businessman can create their Facebook business page.
As can be see, they will gain more an increased exposure to potential customers
as well as build brand loyalty by popularity of Facebook.

 However, the
excessive use of Facebook links to a life style addiction. As the result of a
study by Trach Ryan et al. (2014), some respondents said that  “Facebook has become part of my daily
routine”, “I find that I stay on Facebook longer than intended”, and “I feel
out of touch when I haven’t logged onto Facebook for a while”. Facebook addicts
are so immersed into the virtual world.  Therefore,
they spend almost of their time checking their Facebook account. Some
attractive features for social interaction and exhibitionism makes users irresistible
to Facebook. Facebook addicts is so common among young people. As Suku Balci
and Abdulkadir Golcu put it, the percentage of students at university who have preference
for spending time on Facebook in spite of social activities is 46.4%. Besides,
adults also have a tendency of being Facebook addicts, and the figure for it
increases day by day. In the survey of Suku Balci, all of the 1605 adults asked
about the habits of social networking site, “39% are self-described “Facebook
addicts”. Especially, some users often check Facebook not only during the
daytime but also at midnight time. As a result, Facebook has hidden dangers
which link to negative effects for users.

2.2 Negative consequences of Facebook addiction

2.2.1 Daily activities

     Facebook addicts have to experience
problems in their daily activities. The article “Facebook addictions?” written by Mircharl W.Austin Ph.D., claims
that it is so difficult to quit Facebook, which is much harder than quitting
smoking or giving up alcohol. Some students admitted that they spend more time
on Facebook than on their study. They used Facebook to post or respond while
doing homework or in class, and it affects their efficiencies and grades (Biswa
Bhusan Mohanty, et al 2018). Besides, they are often procrastinated by using
Facebook. A Facebook user claims that “facebook is a fantastic procrastination
tool! I would often check Facebook instead of doing my university assignments”
(Tracii Ryan, et al 2016). Thus, the result of study will get worse. Moreover,
a large proportion of workers also use Facebook while they work. The workers
who are Facebook addicts find it difficult to concentrate on their work. It
links to ineffectiveness on work result, and they can be reprimanded. Not only daytime,
but also nighttime can also be devoted to Facebook. According to Tracii Ryan in
“A qualitative exploration of Facebook
addiction: Working toward construct validity” (2016), some users said “in
the evening, once I sit and get on Facebook, it is really hard to get motivated
to do anything else”. In addition, they will feel anxious and stressful when
sitting and using Facebook for hour. Different studies found spending a great
deal of time on Facebook makes users were overwhelmed by signs of depression
(Afifa Fida Khattak, Summiya Ahmad & Hayat Mohammad 2017). According to an
article namely “Vietnamese Facebook addiction hospitalized for depression”,
because of using Facebook a huge time, a teenager girl in northern Viet Nam
must be hospitalized for depression. As a result, Facebook addicts become less
active with other daily activities, and they are always attracted by live news
feed on Facebook.

2.2.2 Relationships

Facebook addictions also cause a lot of problems for
users’ relationships. Using Facebook frequently, people start to spend less
time with their friends, relatives or families, and they restrict face to face
communication. It links to dissatisfaction or problems in romantic
relationships. According to finding of Tracii Ryan (2016), using a huge time on
Facebook caused bother for participants’ romantic partner that they could
together in this time: “My partner hates me using it because it means I’m not
paying him attention”. Therefore, it was associated with negative relationship
like cheating or break-up. Moreover, in the family, some members become less
attentive to their parents or children, so they will feel withdrawn and
abandoned. It is so rude that people still check Facebook anyway while having a
lot of people around them. Some users admitted that “Instead of meeting
co-workers from work for lunch, I go off and check Facebook messages on my
phone” (Tracii Ryan 2016). Attracted by Facebook, users will lose their
relationships because of their less communication with other people. Gradually,
