However, there has been arguments that oil is our only reliable source of energy.

Furthermore, continues transport and production of oil is a high risk activity which produces negative outcomes for the population (Soto-Oñate & Caballero, 2017). This is because the production oil produces health and global problems by contaminating the air we breath, hence the oil predicament. Thus, this paper will argue that we should switch to renewable energy sources as it is eco-friendly to the environment and is a reliable source of energy. Body 1. Health Effects  Firstly, it has been proven to be true that burning of oil byproducts causes pollution to the environment.

Petroleum is a byproduct of oil which release gases such as Carbo Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Sulfur Dioxide, Lead and other air toxins which lead to air pollution (Environment and Ecology, 2018). Low exposure to these gases can cause problems towards an individuals nervous system such as headache, nausea, dizziness and respiratory irritation; High exposure can cause coma and even death (Schneiderman, 2017). Furthermore, every year oil demands increase by 1-2% (Clemente, 2017). This would show that the production of the gases will continue to increase.

In addition nearly all of these gases have harmful effects on human health and the environment (Environment and Ecology, 2018). 2. Greenhouse effect / Climate Change  Secondly, human activities are changing the natural greenhouse effect. The Earth is getting warmer because people are contributing to gases that trap heat inside earth’s atmosphere, mainly by burning fossil fuels.

These gases are called greenhouse gases which are made up of water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and chlorofluorocarbons. These  greenhouse gases increase the temperature of earth’s atmosphere which are causing other changes around the world, such as melting glaciers and stronger storms (Global climate change, 2017). Burning of coal, natural gas, and oil for electricity and heat is the largest cause of greenhouse gas release globally (EPA, 2017). In the United States power plants are still the main contributing source of energy, because it produces more than 2 billion metric tons, which is a third of the whole U.S. “carbon dioxide equivalent”.

Furthermore these carbon dioxide equivalent’s excrete carbon dioxide, methane, and other gases that contribute to climate change (Plagakis, 2013). In other words the output of greenhouse gases are still continuing to increase. Worldwide, the release of greenhouse gas from human activities have increased by 35 percent from 1990 to 2010. The release of carbon dioxide, which is responsible for about three-fourths of total release, increased by 42 percent during this period (EPA, 2017).

In addition when the  production of greenhouse gases get out of control glaciers and ice caps will melt and they cover about 10 percent of the world’s landmasses. They carry over 75 percent of the world’s freshwater. If all of this ice melted, sea levels will rise by 70 meters.  The rising sea levels can flood coastal cities, relocating millions of people in low-lying areas such as Bangladesh, Florida, and the Netherlands (West & Evers, 2011). Therefore greenhouse gas emissions clearly show that oil and natural gas emit considerably more greenhouse gas pollution. (Plagakis, 2013).

3. Renewable Energy Finally, alternative energy sources can be used to replace oil.  Today, the use of renewable energy sources is increasing, especially biofuels, solar, and wind (U.S. energy information administration, 2017). Renewable energy sources quickly replenish themselves and can be used repeatedly, or this reason they are sometimes called infinite energy resources (BBC, 2014).

We do not have to depend on oil as a energy source, renewable energy can replace oil and is a easily replenished. An advantage to renewable energy is in its production the sun, wind and wave energy; even debris from landscaping like grass clippings or branches can produce energy from the process of biomass that mimic natural decomposition (Williams, 2018). Renewable energy plays an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions (U.

S. energy information administration, 2017). When renewable energy sources are consumed, the production of fossil fuels are reduced. (U.S. energy information administration, 2017). Renewable resources are not only convenient but also good for the environment.

In addition during 2016, the wind energy industry directly employed over 100,000 full time employees in a variety of capacities, including manufacturing, project development, construction and turbine installation, operations and maintenance, transportation and logistics, and financial, legal, and consulting services (UCSUSA, 2017). A study, published by the Environmental Defense Fund’s (EDF) Climate Corps program, says that solar and wind jobs have increased about 20%yearly in past years, and now is responsible for producing half a million jobs in the U.S., which is an increase from 3.4 million in 2011 (Samuelson, 2017). Renewable energy sources create job opportunities for the people. The 2009 Union of Concerned Scientists study of a 25-percent-by-2025 renewable energy standard found that such a policy would create more than three times as many jobs, which is equivalent to more than 200,000 by producing an equivalent amount of electricity from fossil fuels (UCSUSA, 2017).

Considering all of this renewable energy can be used instead of oil. Conclusion In conclusion, there are many reasons why we should stop using oil as a source of energy. Instead we should switch to a more sustainable source of energy which does not harm the planet.
